Repeat after me...
Theres something strangely soothing about tessellations. Maybe it's the sense of balance that occurs or the calm feeling of zoning out and coloring symmetrical designs. Either way, my 6th graders really loved creating these repeating designs.
After today there is still two full weeks left in the school year (and a day!) As we are beginning to wind down our year, there is no denying that there is a sense of chaos in the air that I need to be flexible around. Between field trips, field days, banquets, concerts, etc., kids are always missing a class or two for one reason or another. To start something totally new can be overwhelming for anyone, so I needed to keep this in mind when planning. I needed a lesson that has a great level of repetition and independence.
This was a perfect time to revisit the idea of repetition in a new way with this lesson hexagon tessellation lesson. My 6th graders were to create a unique tile based on their favorite holiday. Starting from an equilateral triangle, we used the idea of symmetry to create a design that can repeat on and on and on.
Can you guess what some of their favorite holidays are?
