Seasonal Still Life Drawings
In school in PA, when you are competing against snow flurries and winter break is quickly approaching, my philosophy is "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" in their excitement. That is why I try to channel all of the holiday energy of my 7th graders in a productive way by creating seasonal still life drawings.

Arrangements of holiday inspired objects were placed on my students' tables and they were required to draw three or more objects. They were to concentrate on rendering the forms as accurately as possible as they drew from direct observation.
(Since some of the objects in the still life set-ups did have sequins on them, I allowed minimal use of glitter if it did not interfere with the drawing itself... (Glitter seems to always be a motivator for some of my middle schoolers!) Many of the students were very happy with the results and I know I certainly am! Yay for winter! Yay for sparkles! Yay for the holidays!
