Inspirational Type Posters

Some of my 8th grade students are hard to engage. With only a few weeks left in the trimester I knew that their next project needed to inspire them individually while still incorporating the school's literacy initiatives. So 8th grade has started creating inspirational watercolor quote posters.

Students were to choose a quote, poem or song lyrics and write the words across a large piece of paper. Their challenge was to "crowd" the entire page with the lettering and incorporate a few different font styles.

As a former graphic designer, I have a deep appreciation for beautiful typography. I briefly discussed different types of fonts (serif, sans-serif, calligraphic, bold roman style, etc.) and how different lettering styles have different connotations or feelings associated with them that the viewer should understand when read.

Students were to design their text according to their chosen message. I asked students if their message was inspirational, funny, or important, which typefaces reflected that feeling. Their posters are currently in-progress as we took a break to also learn 5 watercolor techniques. Students will be painting their posters using these 5 watercolor techniques next week. These are already pretty impressive and they've only just begun! Now I'm re-inspired!
