Middle school review: a shape that repeats infinitely across a plane without any spaces or overlaps is called a tessellation. My 6th graders learned about the artist M.C. Escher and how his repeating designs were inspired by tiles on the walls of Alhambra palace in Spain.
Students then made a repeating "tile" by drawing three unique halves of a face on an equilateral triangle.
We talked about where we might see these types of repetitive designs. This time of year the possibilities are everywhere! From wrapping paper, bed sheets and curtains, tessellations can be found in many places if you look closely.
